I participated in the Monster Collab where an elementary schooler draws a monster, sends it to our high school, and we turn it into a full illustration. It’s a play on “The Monster Project”.

This is the student’s drawing…

On top of the creature’s head there are these jagged, triangular shapes. I interpreted them as either snow-covered mountains or a raised eyebrow. Which is what lead to the island creature idea. At the bottom of his face he again has rough, uneven lines. At first I thought this was a sewn-together mouth, but since this is for a child, I played it safe and went with scraggly teeth. I kept the same distinct gestures for the legs and head, and tried to use warm tropical colors to fit the island theme.
